Do You Need a Website If You Have a Google Business Profile?

Your Google profile gets you found. Your website is what closes the deal and what you actually own. Here is when one is enough and when you need both.

By John Plumstead · October 12, 2026

The short answer

Yes, most businesses need both, but not for the same reasons. Your Google Business Profile is how people find you when they search on a phone in Brandon or Riverview. Your website is what convinces them, what your ads point to, and the one thing online that you fully own.

If you can only do one this month, do the profile. It is free, in our experience it is often the first thing people see when they search for a local business, and a strong profile with no website beats a website nobody can find. But treat the profile as the front door and the website as the house. Eventually you want both.

We build and run both. Our agency side, East of Tampa Business, does website design and Google Business Profile management for businesses across eastern Hillsborough County, so this is what we look at every week.

What each one does

What Google says about local rankings

Google publishes how local results work. It says they are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone searched. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well-known your business is, and Google says that is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

Read that again with a website in mind. You cannot do much about distance. Relevance comes from a complete, accurate profile. Prominence includes links and reviews. A website is where other sites link to, where the chamber directory points, where the local news story links. A business with no website has less for the rest of the internet to point at.

We will not promise anyone a ranking. Nobody honest can. But in our experience, the businesses that hold up in the map results around SR 60 and Big Bend Road tend to have a complete profile, steady reviews and a real website behind it.

When a profile alone is enough, for now

  • You are brand new. Get the profile up, get your first reviews, and start working. Build the site once you know what customers are buying.
  • Almost all your work comes from map searches and referrals. A one-truck handyman in Lithia who is booked three weeks out may not need a site this year.
  • You are not running ads. The day you start paying for traffic, you need a page you control to send it to.

If that is you, make the profile excellent. Our Google Business Profile checklist covers categories, hours, photos, reviews and the duplicate listing problem.

One note for home-based businesses: you do not have to show your house on Google. Google's service area guidance says that if you don't serve customers at your business address, you should remove the address and set a service area. You can set up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or similar area, and Google says you can't set it as a radius around your business. For a business covering Brandon, Riverview, Valrico, FishHawk and Lithia, list those towns.

When you need a website

You run ads. Facebook, Instagram or Google ads should land on a page built for that offer. Sending paid clicks to a profile or a Facebook page throws away a lot of what you paid for. See our guide to Facebook ads for local businesses for how we think about landing pages and lead forms.

Your customers research before they call. A CPA, a dentist, an orthodontist, a contractor coming into the house. People want to see who you are, what you do, and whether you look legitimate. A profile shows the basics. A site answers the questions that decide the sale.

You offer more than one service. A pressure washing company that does driveways, roofs, fleet washing and detailing needs a page for each, written the way customers search for them.

You want to own something. We have seen profiles get suspended, flagged or changed by edits the owner never made, and the layout is Google's call, not yours. Your domain and your site do not change unless you change them.

What a good local website looks like

Two we built and run: Prestige Pressure Washing and Detail, a veteran-owned pressure washing company in Brandon, and Harbor Trust Accounting, a CPA practice in Valrico and Brandon. They are very different businesses, and the sites follow the same rules.

  • Real proof, not stock photos. The Prestige site is 22 pages, with a drag before-and-after at the top built from their real job photos and a 5.0 rating shown from their real Google reviews.
  • A page per service and per area. Someone searching for one specific service should land on a page about exactly that.
  • The phone number everywhere. Top of every page, tappable on a phone.
  • Fast and clean on a phone. A lot of local visitors are on one. Both sites pass a 59-rule automated design audit with zero findings.
  • Same name, address and phone as the profile. Everywhere. Mismatches between your site, your profile and directories cause confusion.

More on how those were built is on our case studies page.

How the two work together

The profile and the site should point at each other. Put your website link on the profile. Put your Google reviews on the website. Use the same business name, phone and hours on both. Post updates on the profile that link to a page on the site.

Then add the rest of your local presence around them: a listing in the East of Tampa directory, your chamber listing, your Facebook page. Each one is another place that points back to the same business with the same details.

What we charge

Websites and Google Business Profile work are quoted per project, because a small brochure site and a 22 page home services site are different jobs. Call 813-495-2136 or use the contact page, tell us what you have now, and we will tell you whether you need a site, a profile cleanup, or just a few fixes you can make yourself.

Questions owners ask

Can a Google Business Profile replace a website?

For a very small business that gets most of its work from map searches and referrals, a complete profile can carry it for a while. For most businesses it cannot fully replace a site, because you do not control the profile's layout, you cannot run proper ad landing pages on it, and you have little room to explain your services in depth.

Does having a website help my Google Maps ranking?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. A real website with real content is part of how you build that, and it gives the profile a page to link to.

I work out of my house. Do I have to show my address on Google?

No. Google's own guidance says if you don't serve customers at your business address, you should remove the address and set a service area instead. You can set up to 20 service areas based on cities, postal codes or other areas.
