Ruskin sits on the bay in the SouthShore part of the county, and it has a history most of its newer residents do not know: it was founded as a socialist colony with a college attached, and the college is gone but the street grid is not.

Agriculture and water

Ruskin tomatoes are a real thing, and agriculture still runs here alongside the growth. E.G. Simmons Park gets you on the water, and Little Harbor is where people go for the beach that technically is not a beach.

The growth

SouthShore is absorbing an enormous amount of new housing, and Ruskin is in the middle of it. US 41 and the I-75 interchange at College Avenue carry most of it, and both are feeling it.

Where the name comes from

Dr. George Miller and his wife Adeline founded Ruskin in 1908 on the southeast shore of Tampa Bay, and named it after John Ruskin, the English art critic, philosopher and social reformer they took as their mentor.

The Ruskin Commongood Society, a collective of local landowners, owned Ruskin College along with a general store and two parks. The Society faded with the First World War, and afterward the area turned to agriculture, with tomatoes as the significant crop. The county says Ruskin now has over 25,000 residents, and that the farms have largely given way to subdivisions, retail and institutional facilities including a Hillsborough Community College campus and county service centers.

The Commongood name survives on the boat ramp, which is a nice piece of continuity for a society that dissolved a century ago.

E.G. Simmons, the one place you can actually swim

E.G. Simmons Conservation Park, 2401 19th Avenue NW, is 258 acres of native mangrove and open land plus another 200 acres of mangrove swamp designated a bird and wildlife sanctuary. It has 700 feet of beach on Tampa Bay, and unlike Apollo Beach Nature Preserve, you can swim.

Entry is $2 per vehicle for up to eight people, and the boat launch is $5. Hours are 8 to 7 in spring and summer, 8 to 6 the rest of the year. There are 110 campsites with electricity, water, picnic tables and fire pits, running $12 to $24 a night depending on age and residency, plus kayak rentals at $25 for four hours and $10 an hour after that. Playground, grills, shelters, restrooms and showers.

The park is named for Ellsworth G. Simmons, who lived in Ruskin his whole life and spent 21 years on the county commission, 18 of them as chairman, plus seven on the school board. He had a hand in establishing USF and Sun City Center, in building Tampa International Airport, and in founding University Community Hospital.

Ruskin Commongood Boat Ramp at 107 1st Avenue NW is free, open sunrise to sunset, with one ramp lane, a dock, a boardwalk, a playground and picnic shelters. It gets you to the Ruskin Inlet, the Little Manatee River and lower Tampa Bay. The picnic shelter there is being replaced starting September 2026, about a month of work.

Ruskin Park and Recreation Center, 901 6th Street SE, has an indoor gym for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, a fitness center with weights, covered outdoor courts, softball and soccer fields, a street hockey court, walking and biking trails, a playground and meeting rooms.

The Firehouse

This is the best thing in Ruskin that nobody outside the area knows about. The Firehouse Cultural Center at 101 1st Avenue NE is the old Hillsborough County Fire Station 17, decommissioned in 2010 because of flood risk from sitting next to the Ruskin Inlet. A nonprofit opened it as an arts center in 2013.

The engine bay doors became a theater seating over 200. The firefighters’ sleeping quarters became a classroom. The original radio tower now broadcasts WPHX 101.9 FM. There is a clay studio with kilns, classrooms, live music, theater, comedy and summer camps.

It also runs Clay Warriors, a free pottery and clay art therapy program for veterans.

Two libraries

Ruskin has two branches, which is more than anywhere else we cover.

Ruskin Branch Library, 26 Dickman Drive SE, is open 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. The library system notes its location where environmental preservation matters, with wildlife views, and it holds a portrait of Pauline Dickman Lawler by Annette Sayler. The Friends run a used bookstore on site.

SouthShore Regional Library at 15816 Beth Shields Way is 40,000 square feet, open 10 to 9 Monday through Thursday and 10 to 6 Friday and Saturday. It has 24 public computers, a genealogy room, a recording studio, Adobe Creative Cloud and meeting rooms. Note that the library system lists it as Ruskin but its ZIP is 33573, which is Sun City Center, so if someone calls it the Sun City Center library you are both partly right.

Schools

Earl J. Lennard High School, 2342 Shell Point Road East, are the Longhorns. Beth Shields Middle School opened in August 2003 and runs around 1,850 students, with no uniforms and before and after school care. It is named for Kathryn Elizabeth Shields, who spent 44 years in the district and became the first female deputy superintendent in Hillsborough County schools.

Shields takes in six elementaries, Belmont, Cypress Creek, Reddick, Ruskin, Thompson and Wimauma, and sends students on to either Lennard or Sumner High.

Roads and the sewer project

US 41 runs north-south through town and US 301 runs north-south well east of I-75. SR 674 is the east-west spine; in Ruskin it is signed East College Avenue, becomes Sun City Center Boulevard heading east, crosses US 301 and continues into Wimauma.

US 301 is being repaved from the Manatee County line up to SR 674, 5.67 miles at $13.6 million. Work started September 29, 2025 and runs to late 2026, day and night. A separate SR 674 intersection project from Cameron Driggers Drive east to 27th Street SE is in design, with construction anticipated in summer 2027: a new mast arm signal, a longer eastbound left turn lane and one median opening converted to directional access.

The bigger change is underground. The county is running a $94.5 million septic-to-sewer conversion across Ruskin and Wimauma, covering roughly 2,000 septic properties and 1,500 on low-pressure sewer, funded by BP settlement money and federal ARP funds. It is a four to five year build connecting about 500 homes a year. In Ruskin’s Area A, west of town along West Shell Point Road north of the inlet, construction phases are already running and connections to central sewer are expected in late 2028.
