Things to Do in Brandon, FL

Brandon is the front door to eastern Hillsborough County. It is unincorporated, which surprises people, and it has no city hall, no mayor and no city limits sign. What it has instead is the commercial spine everyone east of Tampa ends up driving: Brandon Boulevard, which is State Road 60, running from the interstate out toward Valrico.

What people mean when they say Brandon

Most of the county’s shopping happens here. Westfield Brandon anchors the middle, and the plazas along SR 60 and Bloomingdale Avenue hold most of the restaurants, trades and services that serve the communities further east. If you live in FishHawk or Valrico or Riverview, Brandon is probably where you get your car fixed.

Parks

Brandon has more county park land than people expect, and most of it is free and unstaffed.

Brandon Park and Recreation Center, 502 E. Sadie Street, is the only staffed one. It is open 9 to 9 on weekdays and 9 to 6 on Saturday, and it holds pickleball, tennis, sand volleyball, a covered basketball court, a hockey court, a softball field and a playground. There is free WiFi and a concession stand, the meeting rooms and picnic shelters can be rented, and the county runs youth and adult leagues, fitness classes and senior programs out of it.

All Persons Rotary Park, 800 S. Parsons, is eight acres built around a universal playground designed for children of all abilities, alongside a standard playground, a splash pad, picnic shelters and restrooms. Check the county page before you drive out for the splash pad specifically; it has been down for repairs. Clayton Park sits on the same block with a baseball field, shelters and a concession stand.

Bloomingdale West Park on Canoga Park Drive is nineteen acres with paved trails, basketball, tennis, racquetball, sand volleyball and an open field. Racquetball courts are genuinely rare around here.

The rest are sports complexes. North Brandon Sports Complex on Kingsway has baseball, football and tennis. J.C. Handly Sports Complex on Kings Avenue has baseball, football, soccer, tennis and a hiking trail, and hosts youth football, cheer and soccer. Lakeview Village Park off Lakeview Village Drive is the neighborhood option, with basketball, a playground and shelters.

The library, and the one that is coming

Brandon Regional Library at 619 Vonderburg Drive is two stories inside the Sandy Rodriguez Center, which it shares with the Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association. There is a sculpture outside called Past; Present; Future, a first-floor gallery showing local professional artists, Adobe Creative Cloud workstations, assistive technology, meeting space and, unusually, a cooking oil recycling station. It opened at that location on March 10, 1991, as one of the first two regional libraries in the county system.

It is being replaced. Hillsborough County has a capital project on the books for a new Brandon library of 25,000 square feet, expandable to 35,000, on a site the county already owns. The budget is $22.4 million, $1.2 million of it design and land and $21.2 million construction. Design finished in mid-2025 and the project is in procurement, with construction expected to start in late 2026 and finish around mid-2027.

Schools

Brandon High School, 1101 Victoria Street, are the Eagles. Burns Middle School on Brooker Road are the Bruins, and the school describes itself as operating in the Bloomingdale area, which makes it the seam between Brandon and Valrico. Horace Mann Middle School sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Brandon.

The chamber calendar

The Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce runs most of the recurring public events in this half of the county, and the dates anchor a lot of local calendars.

Trick or Treat Street in October is safe, organized trick-or-treating, with registered businesses, churches and organizations decorating booths and handing out candy. The Brandon Parade of Lights is the December holiday parade, over 100 entries including local leaders, businesses and marching bands. Political Hob Nob brings candidates out to mix with voters and ends in a straw poll. The Community Health and Wellness Fair puts local medical providers and wellness businesses together with on-site screenings, food trucks, sports demonstrations and live entertainment.

Before the school year the chamber runs a teacher appreciation event: members donate to Teacher Supply Stops, and teachers new to the area walk through collecting free classroom supplies. Public, charter and private schools all take part.

For members there is also the Annual Chamber Awards, the Annual Meeting, the Tallahassee Trek up to the legislative session, Good Morning BRCC as a local government forum, the Toss It Like a Leader cornhole fundraiser, a monthly luncheon and regular ribbon cuttings. Brandon Riverview Wonder Women meets the second Wednesday quarterly, in February, May, August and November, as a breakfast power hour with a women’s vendor market.

The chamber itself is based at 6437 Watson Road in Riverview, not in Brandon.

Getting around

Brandon Boulevard is State Road 60, six lanes through the commercial core, and it backs up. The reliable trouble spots are SR 60 at I-75, SR 60 at Kings and Parsons, and Bloomingdale Avenue at Bell Shoals.

Locals run Lumsden Road parallel when the boulevard is stacked, and use Kings or Parsons to move north and south without touching US 301. The Selmon Expressway and its reversible lanes get you into downtown Tampa faster than I-75 most mornings.

Bell Shoals Road changed the whole triangle. The county widened 3.1 miles of it from Bloomingdale Avenue down to Boyette Road, two lanes to four divided, with bike lanes, sidewalks both sides, a new signal at Starwood and a widened bridge over the Alafia. It fully opened on December 15, 2023, and it is now the north-south route between Brandon and Riverview that avoids both 301 and the interstate.

Two FDOT resurfacing projects are live on SR 60: one from east of Grand Regency to east of Buckingham Place, and one from east of Lithia Pinecrest to west of Valrico Road.

Eating and shopping

The split is worth knowing. National retail concentrates around Brandon Town Center and along the boulevard. The independents are mostly one street back, on the older Parsons and Kings corridors and in the strip centers off Lumsden. A&G Diner on North Parsons is the kind of place that explains the pattern: family-owned, American comfort food crossed with Greek, in a building nobody would call a destination from SR 60.

Just west of town, off the Causeway side, is the TGH Ice Plex, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s official practice facility. Everyone here calls it the Brandon rink. It runs youth and adult hockey leagues, high school games and a Learn to Play program.
