Plant City is the one place we cover that is an actual incorporated city, with its own commission, police department and downtown. It sits at the eastern edge of Hillsborough County, and it is the only community out here with a real Main Street.

Strawberries

The Florida Strawberry Festival is the biggest thing that happens in east county all year, and it reorganizes traffic, school schedules and everyone’s calendar for eleven days. Plant City grows a large share of the country’s winter strawberries, and the agriculture is not decorative. It is still the economy.

Downtown

Historic downtown Plant City has been coming back for a decade now: restaurants, a brewery scene, the train depot and the McCall Park events. It is worth the drive from Brandon even when the festival is not on.

It has a real government, and that changes things

Plant City runs on a commission-manager system: five commissioners elected at large to overlapping three-year terms, plus a mayor-commissioner who serves one year. The city puts its own population at 38,938.

It operates its own state-accredited police department, its own fire rescue with advanced life support, its own water, wastewater and solid waste, its own library and its own parks department. Nowhere else we cover has any of that. The city’s stated theme is “embracing the future, while preserving the past,” and it names Paradise Fruit, Tata Tea and Kerry Ingredients & Flavours among its major employers.

The Strawberry Festival

The Florida Strawberry Festival started in 1930, organized by the Plant City Lions Club to mark the harvest. It went dark for six years during the Second World War and was brought back in 1948 by American Legion Post 26. It runs at 303 BerryFest Place, and the 2027 dates are March 4 to 14.

It is an agricultural fair first: livestock shows, horticulture, commerce and industry exhibits, fine arts, crafts, contests and youth programs, alongside the entertainment acts and the parades. It is governed by a local board and takes no taxpayer subsidy, which is unusual for an event that size. The festival says it now ranks among the top 40 fairs in North America.

The scale of what it celebrates is real. By the festival’s own accounting, the region plants more than 10,000 acres of strawberries a year, and Hillsborough County has roughly 2,800 farms producing fruit and vegetable crops worth over $360 million annually.

The rest of the calendar

Pig Jam runs each November at the Randy Larson Softball Fourplex, put on by the Plant City Chamber of Commerce. It is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, with professional and amateur contests and $20,000 in prizes, two entertainment stages and a kids’ area. Admission is free and parking is $20.

Two things happen every month downtown. The Strawberry Classic Cruise-In takes over historic downtown on the third Saturday, 3 to 6 p.m. Last Friday runs the final Friday of each month, 5 to 9 p.m. on Main Street, with vendors and food trucks. And Henry’s Hidden Train Hunt runs daily year-round out of 102 North Palmer Street, a train-themed clue and trivia hunt through downtown.

The city also points visitors to Bike Fest, the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Cultural Arts Festival, and Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

Downtown and the railroad

The Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum is in the old Plant City Union Depot at 102 North Palmer Street. The depot opened in 1909 and ran until 1971, and it was built and shared by two competing railroads, the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line, which crossed here in a rare double diamond junction. It went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

It now holds a restored caboose, a train engine, rail carts and model railroad displays, plus an observation deck and a fourteen-foot tower for watching trains go through. You will see CSX freight, the Tropicana orange juice train and the Amtrak Silver Star.

The county’s own historical marker makes the economic point plainly: without the railroad and the station, it would have been impossible to ship products directly and cheaply across the country. That is why Plant City is Plant City.

The city’s visitor guide also points to the 1914 Plant City High School Community Center, home of the East Hillsborough Historical Society, the Bing Rooming House Museum, and the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center.

Bruton Memorial Library at 302 West McLendon Street started in 1927 as a volunteer library founded by the Plant City Woman’s Club, and became tax-funded in 1959 when residents voted for it. It was renamed for Quintilla Geer Bruton and Judge James D. Bruton, Jr. during a 1994 expansion. Today it is 20,000 square feet with about 55,000 items, study rooms, a community meeting room and the Imagination Garden. Any Hillsborough County resident can get a card.

Parks

The city runs 23 park sites. A few worth knowing: Dr. Hal and Lynn Brewer Park on Hunter Street has a lit, twelve-foot-wide paved trail just over half a mile around a 7.5-acre retention pond. Samuel W. Cooper Park on Dr. MLK Jr. Boulevard has a paved and lighted 0.6-mile lakeside loop. Village Green on West Renfro has a three-tier marble fountain and a chess table. Gilchrist Heights Dog Park on North Knight Street is double-gated with shade and water. Plant City Tennis Center on North Wilder has a HydroGrid clay court, lighted hard courts and a pro shop. Marie B. Ellis Park has three shuffleboard courts.

Just outside town, Edward Medard Conservation Park on Turkey Creek Road wraps a 700-acre reservoir with a three-mile hiking, biking and equestrian trail, disc golf, a boardwalk and observation platform, beach volleyball and 43 campsites. Canoe and kayak rentals are $25 for four hours. It was Pleasant Grove Park before a mining company donated it to the water management district in 1969, which makes it another reclaimed phosphate landscape, the same story as Alafia River State Park over in Lithia.

Alderman’s Ford Conservation Park on Alderman’s Ford Park Drive has the 1.9-mile paved loop along both prongs of the Alafia. The separate Alderman’s Ford Nature Preserve on Turkey Creek Road is 985 acres of bottomland forest, pine flatwoods and sandhill remnants, part of the South Hillsborough Wildlife Corridor, holding Sherman’s fox squirrel, sandhill crane and gopher tortoise. Note that it is open weekends only, closed Monday through Friday until further notice, for habitat restoration.

Dinosaur World at 5145 Harvey Tew Road is 22 acres of life-sized dinosaur replicas outdoors, open daily 10 to 5 and closed only on Christmas, with a fossil dig, gem mining and a playground. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds. Keel Farms at 5202 Thonotosassa Road is a working farm with pub dining, winery tours and tastings, ciders and ales, and seasonal u-pick.

Schools

Plant City High School are the Raiders, and their address is 1 Raider Place. Durant High School are the Cougars at 4748 Cougar Path. The mascots are in the addresses.

Middle schools are Tomlin on North Woodrow Wilson, the Tigers; Turkey Creek on South Turkey Creek Road, the Gobblers; and Marshall Middle Magnet School on South Maryland Avenue.

Strawberry Crest High is often called a Plant City school. It is in neighboring Dover.

Road work

Plant City has 21 active FDOT projects, more than anywhere else in the county. The ones that will affect you: I-4 widening from I-75 to west of the Polk Parkway, a westbound I-4 auxiliary lane from east of Bethlehem Road to west of Branch Forbes, an I-4 truck parking facility, intersection work on East Alexander Street at Jim Johnson Road, new sidewalk on SR 39 Alexander Street from James L. Redman Parkway to Reynolds Street, pavement reconstruction on James L. Redman Parkway, repaving on Park Road, and the SR 60 Hopewell Road widening from Dover Road to SR 39. There is also a sidewalk project at Marshall Middle School.
